George R. Schlegel, 65, of Plymouth peacefully passed away at his home on Tuesday, October 24, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on October 20, 1958 in Joliet, IL and was raised by his Gram and Aunt Grace.
He celebrated 44 years of marriage with his beloved bride, Judith Ann Stewart, who he married on September 22, 1979 in Richton Park, IL. Together, they raised three daughters, Dawn, Shelia, and Brandy who will miss him dearly. He showed his daughters what a real man should be and how a lady should be treated. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. George was a family man at heart and was the light that connected his family.
George retired in 2008 after dedicating 31 years of his career to Pregis. During his time at the factory, he met his best friend, Rodney Jacobs. While he may have seemed intimidating to others, him and Rodney clicked and had a mutual respect. Throughout his life, George was a quiet person who was a gentle giant when you got to know him.
He was known as being a silly, playful spirit by those who knew and loved him. George was thoughtful and selfless in his actions. He was an avid fan of the Chicago Bears and Pink Floyd. He enjoyed spending time on the golf course and watching documentaries.
George is survived by his beloved wife, Judith; children, Dawn Cortina of Crown Point, Shelia Mejia of Bremen, and Brandy (Rocky) Whitaker of Plymouth; grandchildren, Candace, Tony Jr. Kristie, Justin (Thin), and Abri; and great-grandchildren, Vayda, Isla, Everly, Atlas, Nadi, Yadi, Madelyn, Carter, and soon-to-be, Leon. He is also survived by his best friend, Rodney Jacobs, who he thought of as a brother.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Georgia Schlegel.
George loved animals and will be missed by his pets, Yogi, Teddy, and Coco; and he will be met in heaven by Mojo, Marlo, and Gizmo.
